Size
Approximately 1.5 to 2 inches, which is on the smaller side for this species. Adults typically range from 2 to 4 inches in length.
Color & Pattern
Glossy, porcelain-like exterior with a rich chestnut-brown or purplish-brown base color. The dorsum features distinct pale bluish-white circular spots ringed with darker brown (giving the 'measled' appearance), along with transverse lighter bands. The base and margins are a creamy white with dark brownish-black spots.
Rarity
Uncommon to Rare as a pristine beach find, as they tend to inhabit deeper reef crevices rather than washing ashore intact.
Habitat
Shallow subtidal marine environments, typically found hiding under coral rubble, inside crevices, or beneath large rocks in coral reefs and rocky areas from the low tide line down to about 30 meters.
Geographic Range
Western Atlantic Ocean, including the southeastern United States, Florida, the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean Sea, and south along the coast of Brazil.
Description
An attractive and highly polished univalve shell with an ovate, elongated, and inflated body whorl. The spire is completely covered in adult shells. It features a long, narrow aperture running the length of the base, lined with numerous fine, dark-colored teeth on both the outer and inner lips.

Interesting Facts
Like all cowries, the living animal possesses a specialized mantle that extends outward to cover the shell, keeping it polished and free of algae while secreting the glossy outer enamel layer.
Ecological Role
Nocturnal herbivores that graze primarily on algae and encrusting sponges on the reef. They play a role in controlling algal growth and serve as prey for large carnivorous gastropods, fish, and crustaceans.
Similar Species
Atlantic Deer Cowrie (Macrocypraea cervus), which is generally larger and features white spots without the distinct dark rings found on the Measled Cowrie.

Finding a live or pristine Measled Cowrie on a sandy beach is quite rare; beachcombers are more likely to find weathered fragments. For live or intact specimens, night diving or carefully flipping loose coral rubble in shallow reef waters during low tide is necessary.
