Size
Approximately 2 to 2.5 inches, which is slightly on the smaller side for this species. Adults typically range from 2.5 to 4.5 inches in length.
Color & Pattern
The base color is a warm brownish-grey or chestnut, overlaid with faint, characteristic light-colored circular spots or blotches ('measles') surrounded by darker rings. Longitudinal bands are faintly visible across the dorsum. The colors appear slightly worn or sun-bleached, suggesting it has spent time tumbling in the surf.
Rarity
Uncommon to Rare as a beach find, especially in good condition, as they typically inhabit deeper reef crevices and rarely wash ashore intact.
Habitat
Found in tropical and subtropical shallow waters, typically living under coral rocks, inside crevices, and beneath ledges in coral reef environments and rocky substrates from the intertidal zone down to about 30 meters.

Description
This is a handsome specimen of the Measled Cowrie, characterized by its smooth, glossy, elongated-ovate form and rounded dome. While cowries lose their high-gloss exterior finish when subjected to beach-wearing, this specimen retains remnants of its classic pattern. The smooth surface curves down to a narrow, toothed aperture running along the underside.

Interesting Facts
Like all cowries, the living animal covers its shell with fleshy mantle lobes that continuously deposit shiny new shell layers and protect it from algae and barnacle growth. In the past, cowries have been heavily collected for ornamentation and currency.
