Triton's Trumpet or Hairy Triton (often referred to as a Hairy Triton or related Cymatium/Monoplex species)
Phylum: Mollusca, Class: Gastropoda, Order: Littorinimorpha, Family: Cymatiidae, Genus: Monoplex, Species: Monoplex parthenopeus · Cymatiidae (Triton family) · Gastropod (spiral shape, whole shell)

Species
Monoplex parthenopeus
Shell Type
Gastropod (spiral shape, whole shell)
Family
Cymatiidae (Triton family)
Size
Approximately 2 to 3 inches in length, which is a sub-adult size for this species. Adults typically range from 3 to 5 inches.
Color & Pattern
Rich brown and yellowish-white banding with prominent darker brown spiral cords and streaks. Natural coloration is well-preserved with characteristic contrasting axial ridges and nodular formations.
Rarity
Common to Uncommon, frequently collected by beachcombers in suitable regions but prized for specimens with intact lips and periostracum.
Habitat
Shallow subtidal and intertidal zones, typically found on rocky reefs, coral rubble, and sandy bottoms in tropical to warm temperate marine environments.
Geographic Range
Circumtropical and warm temperate seas worldwide, including the Western Atlantic, Mediterranean, Indo-Pacific, and South Africa.
Description
A sturdy, heavily sculpted spiral gastropod featuring prominent rounded whorls, strong axial varices, and a rough nodular texture. The surface is adorned with raised spiral cords and a rich pattern of brown and cream flames. The spire is moderately high, and the outer lip is thickened and toothed.
Key Features
Distinguished by its heavy spiral ribs, distinct varices formed at growth pauses, a stout and moderately elevated spire, and a thick, flared outer lip with denticles (teeth) inside the aperture.
Collector Value
Moderate. While not exceptionally rare, good specimens with intact lips and strong color patterns are desirable additions to general marine shell collections, usually valued at a modest commercial price.
Condition Notes
Good to Fine condition. The shell is intact with most of its natural coloration retained and only minor wear on the outermost spire and apertural lip. No major structural damage or boring marks are visible.
Interesting Facts
Tritons are voracious carnivorous predators that specialize in eating other mollusks, echinoderms like sea urchins, and starfish. They use a powerful proboscis and specialized secretions to subdue their prey.
Ecological Role
Plays an important top-down predatory role in marine benthic ecosystems by controlling populations of herbivorous grazers like sea urchins and various snails, thereby maintaining healthy coral and rocky reef habitats.
Similar Species
Other members of the Cymatiidae family such as Ranella olearium or Cymatiumpileare, which can be distinguished by differences in varices spacing, spine development, and aperture dentition.
Beach Finding Tips
Look along rocky shorelines, near reef structures, or amongst shell drift cast ashore following heavy storms or rough wave action in tropical or warm temperate regions.
