Description

A charming cluster of four small, robust marine gastropods. Each shell displays a strongly cancellate or grid-like surface sculpture formed by intersecting axial ribs and spiral cords, giving them a distinctly textured, beaded appearance. The apertures are small and ovate with thickened outer lips bearing small denticles.

Collector Value

Condition Notes

Fair to Good condition for beach-collected specimens. All four shells are intact and retain their structural integrity and heavy sculptural relief, but they are fully sun-bleached to a uniform white with loss of any original brown or black pigmentation.

Interesting Facts

Despite their tiny size, these micro-gastropods are carnivorous or scavenging neogastropods equipped with a proboscis and a radula to feed on small invertebrates or organic detritus in the rocky intertidal zone.

Ecological Role

They serve as minor scavengers and predators in the intertidal food web, helping recycle organic matter, and provide an important food source for small shorebirds, crabs, and larger carnivorous fish.

Similar Species

Small species of Nassarius (mud snails), Columbella (dove shells), and Engina, which can be distinguished by subtle differences in aperture dentition, siphonal canal length, and original color patterns.

Beach Finding Tips

Look in shell drift lines, tide pool margins, and pockets of fine coral gravel or sand accumulated between intertidal rocks. Using a magnifying glass or fine-mesh sieve in shell hash yields the best results.
