White Sunray Venus (or Speckled Venus variant)
Kingdom: Animalia, Phylum: Mollusca, Class: Bivalvia, Subclass: Heterodonta, Order: Venerida, Family: Veneridae, Genus: Macrocallista, Species: Macrocallista squalida · Veneridae (Venus Clam family) · Bivalve (single valve shown); shape is ovate-trigonal/sub-triangular with a prominent umbo.

Species
Macrocallista squalida (90% confidence based on Cabo locality)
Shell Type
Bivalve (single valve shown); shape is ovate-trigonal/sub-triangular with a prominent umbo.
Family
Veneridae (Venus Clam family)
Size
Approximately 1.5 to 2.5 inches (38-64mm) in length. This appears to be a juvenile or mid-sized specimen, as adults in this region can reach up to 3.5 inches.
Color & Pattern
Base color is a creamy white to pale ivory. It exhibits subtle concentric growth bands. While the 'squalida' species often has brownish, mottled speckling, this specimen appears somewhat sun-bleached or is a pale color morph, showing a clean, vitreous (glass-like) luster typical of the genus.
Rarity
Common (frequently found beachcombing in the Baja California and Sea of Cortez region).
Habitat
Marine; typically found in shallow subtidal zones, burrowing in sandy or muddy substrates, often in protected bays or lagoons.
Geographic Range
Eastern Pacific, specifically from Baja California (Cabo San Lucas) and the Gulf of California south to Peru.
Description
A glossy, solid, and moderately inflated bivalve valve. The surface is exceptionally smooth with very fine, concentric growth lines. The shell has a distinctive sub-triangular or 'egg-shaped' profile with a rounded anterior and a slightly more tapered posterior end. The shell wall is thick and durable with a porcelaneous finish.
Key Features
Smooth, glossy texture; prominent umbo (beak) curved towards the anterior; lack of radial ribs; characteristic 'Venus' hinge structure (hidden in image).
Collector Value
Low to Moderate ($2 - $10 USD). Because they are common, they are mostly valued by amateur collectors for их aesthetic smoothness and luster rather than high-end rarity.
Condition Notes
Good condition. The shell maintains its natural gloss, suggesting it hadn't been tumbling in the surf for very long. There are slight signs of edge wear near the ventral margin. Grade: Fine.
Interesting Facts
The genus name 'Macrocallista' means 'Large and most beautiful.' These clams are active burrowers that use a muscular foot to quickly hide beneath the sand to avoid predators like sea stars and snail drills.
Ecological Role
Suspension feeder that filters plankton and organic detritus from the water column, helping to maintain water clarity. They are a prey source for larger gastropods and rays.
Similar Species
Macrocallista nimbosa (Sunray Venus) found in the Atlantic/Gulf of Mexico, which is more elongated and often possesses radial rays. Also similar to Dosinia ponderosa, but that species is more circular.
Beach Finding Tips
Look along sandy beaches in the Baja region after a high tide or storm. They are often found half-buried where the tide line meets the soft sand.
