Tapestry Venus, Lettered Venus, or Carpet Shell

Species

Tapes dorsatus (Confidence Level: 85%)

Shell Type

Bivalve; single valve (left valve shown); sub-ovate/oblong fan shape.

Family

Veneridae (Venus Clams family)

Size

Approximately 35-45mm in length. This is a mid-sized juvenile or small adult; the species can reach up to 90mm.

Color & Pattern

Creamy yellow base with grayish-green staining near the dorsal margin. Features faint radial lines and concentric growth rings. The surface illustrates typically 'tapestry' zig-zag patterns that have been somewhat eroded or covered by mineral staining.

Rarity

Common; frequently found on beaches in the Brisbane and Sandgate areas, especially after high tides or storms.

Habitat

Intertidal and shallow subtidal zones. Prefers sandy or muddy substrates in sheltered bays and estuaries.

Geographic Range

Indo-West Pacific; specifically common along the northern and eastern coasts of Australia, including Moreton Bay and the Brisbane region.

Description

A sturdy, solid bivalve shell with an elongated-oval shape. The exterior is sculpted with fine, close-set concentric ridges and weaker radial striae. The umbo (beak) is positioned anteriorly. The interior would typically be smooth and white with a deep pallial sinus.

Key Features

Oblique/ovate shape, fine decussate sculpture (radial and concentric lines crossing), and the specific mustard-yellow to olive-green color palette common in Queensland specimens.

Collector Value

Low. This is a very common beach-found valve. High-quality 'Gem' specimens with intact patterns and both valves (paired) might hold minor value for specialized bivalve collectors ($2-$5 USD).

Condition Notes

Fair to Good. The shell shows significant beach wear and 'weathering.' The dorsal edge has some chipping, and the natural pattern is obscured by environmental staining or calcification. Collectibility is for reference/educational use.

Interesting Facts

The name 'Venus' refers to the goddess of love, a tribute to the beauty of the shells in this family. Many species in the Tapes genus are commercially harvested as 'pipis' or 'vongole' for food in various parts of the world.

Ecological Role

A suspension feeder that filters plankton and organic detritus from the water column, helping to maintain water clarity within the Moreton Bay ecosystem.

Similar Species

Ruditapes philippinarum (Manila Clam) which is usually more ribbed, and Gomphina undulosa, which is typically more triangular and smoother.

Beach Finding Tips

Search the strandline at Sandgate/Brighton during low tide. They are often found partially buried in the muddy sand or clustered near mangroves and seagrass beds after a storm.
