Habitat

This specimen is a classic example of a keyhole sand dollar test—the rigid, calcareous internal skeleton of a flattened sea urchin. It possesses a smooth, rounded, yet flattened disc profile featuring five distinct oblong perforations, known as lunules or keyholes, which help prevent the animal from being swept away by strong currents. The upper surface is delicately sculpted with a prominent central five-petaled star (petalloid), which serves as specialized respiratory structures.

The presence of exactly five elongated lunules (keyholes) piercing completely through the flat, disc-like test, combined with the central five-petaled flower design on the aboral surface, definitively separates this species from standard unpierced sand dollars.

Good to Fine condition. The test is completely intact with no major structural breaks or missing edge fragments. The color is uniformly bleached white due to sun exposure after death. All five keyholes and the delicate petalloid pattern are sharply defined.
Interesting Facts
When alive, these animals are covered in thousands of microscopic, moving spines that give them a velvety texture and a purplish-brown color. They use these tiny spines and microscopic cilia to move across the sand and pass food particles toward their central mouth on the underside. According to folklore, the markings on the test represent the life of Jesus, featuring a star, Easter lilies, and a poinsettia, with the dove of peace hidden inside.
Ecological Role
Keyhole urchins play a crucial role in marine benthic ecosystems by bioturbating (churning and aerating) sandy sediments as they burrow, feeding on organic detritus and microscopic algae. They serve as prey for bottom-feeding fish, crabs, and sea stars.
