Dove Snail (also known as Dove Shell)

Phylum: Mollusca, Class: Gastropoda, Order: Neogastropoda, Family: Columbellidae, Genus: Columbella, Species: Columbella mercatoria · Columbellidae (Dove snail family) · Gastropod (univalve snail), whole shell, spiral shape

Dove Snail (also known as Dove Shell)

Species

Columbella mercatoria (Common Doveshell)

Shell Type

Gastropod (univalve snail), whole shell, spiral shape

Family

Columbellidae (Dove snail family)

Size

Approximately 5 to 8 millimeters in length. This is typical for adults of this species, which generally range between 6 and 15 millimeters.

Color & Pattern

Cream to white base color heavily patterned with distinctive reddish-brown to dark brown spots, blotches, and zigzag markings arranged in spiral bands. The interior of the aperture matches the exterior patterns where visible. Colors appear completely natural and well-preserved.

Rarity

Common (frequently found by dedicated beachcombers and shell enthusiasts searching among shell drift and intertidal rubble zones)

Habitat

Found primarily in shallow intertidal and subtidal zones, often dwelling on rocky shores, coral rubble, and among algae and seagrass beds in warm marine environments.

Geographic Range

Widespread in the tropical Western Atlantic, including the Caribbean Sea, the Bahamas, southern Florida, and extending down to Brazil.

Description

A charmingly diminutive, robust little gastropod shell featuring a short spire, an inflated body whorl, and a narrow, elongated aperture. The outer lip is thickened and distinctly denticulated (toothed) on the interior. The surface exhibits a glossy sheen with intricate brown markings over a pale background, making it a delightful micro-shell find.

Key Features

Small stout size, short conical spire, thickened outer lip with internal denticles, and characteristic brown spotted or zigzag patterning on a pale background.

Collector Value

Low monetary value, generally worth a few cents to a dollar individually, but very popular among micro-shell collectors and crafters due to their appealing patterns and diminutive size.

Condition Notes

Gem to Fine condition. The shell appears intact with a well-preserved glossy surface, clear color patterns, and an undamaged outer lip, showing no signs of severe erosion or predator bore holes.

Interesting Facts

Despite their tiny size, dove snails are active marine scavengers and carnivores that feed on microscopic organic matter and detritus. Their name comes from the graceful, dove-like gliding motion of the living snail as it moves across substrates.

Ecological Role

Plays an important part in the nearshore marine food web as a consumer of algae and detritus, serving as prey for small fish, crabs, and carnivorous gastropods. Not currently endangered or regulated.

Similar Species

Other members of the Columbellidae family, such as Pyrene or Mitrella species, which can be distinguished by subtle differences in aperture dentition, spire height, and specific color patterning.

Beach Finding Tips

Best found by sifting through fine shell drift, tide line debris, and coral rubble on Caribbean or southern Florida beaches, particularly using a micro-shell scoop or sorting tray.
