Description

A heavily weathered and damaged upper valve of a bivalve, likely an Anomiid. It features a thin, translucent, thin-layered calcitic-nacreous structure with irregular, wavy growth lines. A large hole is broken through near the apex/center due to structural weakness and wear.

Poor to Fair condition. The specimen suffers from severe breakage, missing a large section of the margin and featuring a large central hole caused by erosion/impact. Heavily beach-worn with fine pitting from clionid boring sponges.

Interesting Facts

Members of Anomiidae are known as 'jingle shells' because when strung together, they chime like wind bells. The lower valve has a natural hole (foramen) through which a calcified byssus plugs directly onto rocks or other shells.

Ecological Role

Sessile filter feeders that help clarify water by consuming plankton and suspended organic matter; their shells provide micro-habitats for small encrusting marine organisms.

Similar Species

Pododesmus rudis (False Pacific Jingle Shell), Placuna placenta (Windowpane Oyster), and various true oysters (Ostreidae family), which are generally much thicker and heavier.
