Description
A small, robustly sculpted fusiform gastropod shell featuring a elevated, pointed spire with about 5-6 whorls. The shell surface is characterized by prominent rounded axial ribs crossed by finer spiral cords, creating a rough, grid-like texture. Shoulder angles are distinctly knobby. The anterior siphonal canal is short and slightly open at the base.

It uses a combination of acid secretions from an accessory boring organ (ABO) and a rasping radula to drill a neat round hole through bivalve shells to feed on the soft tissue inside, making it a major pest in commercial oyster fisheries.
Ecological Role
A key predatory gastropod in estuarine food webs, helping control populations of young oysters, mussels, and barnacles, while serving as prey for blue crabs, stone crabs, and seabirds.
