Ladd's Dove Shell (or more broadly, a Dove Shell)
Phylum: Mollusca, Class: Gastropoda, Order: Neogastropoda, Family: Columbellidae, Genus: Mitrella, Species: nympha · Columbellidae (Dove shells) · Gastropod (univalve snail). The shape is fusiform to biconical with a high spire.

Species
Most likely Mitrella nympha (synonym Columbella nympha), confidence 75%
Shell Type
Gastropod (univalve snail). The shape is fusiform to biconical with a high spire.
Family
Columbellidae (Dove shells)
Size
Approximately 8-12mm in length. This is standard for small Dove shells which typically range from 5mm to 20mm.
Color & Pattern
Base color is an off-white or pale cream with a distinct grayish-blue or charcoal smudge on the body whorl. The spire shows small dark dots or a faint checkered pattern at the suture lines. The protoconch (tip) appears slightly darker or reddish-brown.
Rarity
Common (found regularly in shell grit or by sifting through sand/seaweed in appropriate regions).
Habitat
Typically found in shallow marine environments, intertidal zones, and under rocks or amongst algae in tropical to subtropical waters.
Geographic Range
Commonly found throughout the Indo-Pacific region, including areas around Northern Australia, Southeast Asia, and Pacific Islands.
Description
A small, sturdy, smooth shell with an elegant high spire and a slightly inflated body whorl. The surface is glossy when fresh. It features a narrow aperture (not visible in this angle) and a short siphonal canal. The texture is largely smooth with very fine growth lines.
Key Features
High pointed spire, biconical shape, distinctive dark spotting at the suture transitions, and the characteristic blueish-gray wash on the lower half of the shell.
Collector Value
Low monetary value ($0.10 - $1.00), but high aesthetic value for 'micro-shell' collectors. They are popular for use in delicate shell jewelry due to their small, consistent size.
Condition Notes
Beach-worn condition. There is significant loss of the original high-gloss polish and some erosion at the base and apex. Grade: Fair/Good for beach-found material.
Interesting Facts
Dove shells are known for being extremely diverse and are often the 'gems' found in shell grit. The living animals are active carnivores or scavengers that move relatively quickly across the substrate.
Ecological Role
Small predators that feed on tiny invertebrates or organic detritus. They serve as a food source for larger crabs and small fish.
Similar Species
Mitrella lischkei or various Zafrona species. It is distinguished from Zafrona by its smoother texture (Zafrona often has axial ribs).
Beach Finding Tips
Look in 'shell wash' or the line of tiny debris left at the high tide mark. Use a magnifying glass or sieve to sort through fine gravel and broken shell fragments in tidal pools.
