Antigona Venus or Frigid Venus (formerly known as Princess Venus)
Phylum: Mollusca, Class: Bivalvia, Order: Venerida, Family: Veneridae, Genus: Antigona, Species: Antigona rigida · Veneridae (Venus Clam family) · Bivalve (single valve shown); Fan/Oval shape

Species
Antigona rigida (Confidence: 85%)
Shell Type
Bivalve (single valve shown); Fan/Oval shape
Family
Veneridae (Venus Clam family)
Size
Small juvenile specimen, approximately 12-18mm in width. Adults typically reach 40-80mm.
Color & Pattern
Off-white to creamy beige base with tan to brownish concentric banding. The patterns follows the heavy sculptural ridges. Appearing slightly sun-bleached with sand-matt texture.
Rarity
Common (often found as beach-worn valves, though high-quality live-taken specimens are more prized).
Habitat
Marine; shallow subtidal to offshore waters (up to 50 meters depth). Prefer sandy or muddy substrates where they can burrow.
Geographic Range
Western Atlantic: Southern Florida, Caribbean Sea, and south to Brazil.
Description
A robust, rounded bivalve characterized by its heavy, cancellations-style sculpture. It features strong concentric ridges that are crossed by finer radial ribs, creating a grid-like or beaded appearance. The shell is thick and sturdy for its size.
Key Features
Distinctive lattice-like (cancellated) sculpture; heavy concentric ridges that are 'frilled' or deeply etched; rounded-oval profile with a prominent umbo (beak).
Collector Value
Low to modest ($1-$5 for beach finds). High-quality, matched-valve specimens with vivid markings may have higher value for specialist collectors.
Condition Notes
Fair condition. This is a single valve (half of the clam). It shows some erosion on the ridges and some light sand-polishing, typical of a beach find. Collectibility grade: Good (for a beach-found reference specimen).
Interesting Facts
The Venus family is named after the Roman goddess of love and beauty. Members of the Antigona genus are known for their exceptionally thick shells, which protect against crushing predators like crabs and rays.
Ecological Role
Suspension feeder that filters plankton and organic detritus from the water column. They serve as a food source for bottom-feeding fish, rays, and gastropods like whelks.
Similar Species
Chione cancellata (Cross-barred Venus) which is smaller and more sharply triangular; Mercenaria mercenaria (Quahog) which lacks the heavy frilled concentric ridges.
Beach Finding Tips
Look in the shell hash line after a high tide or storm, particularly on Caribbean or Gulf Coast beaches. Their density often causes them to settle in groups along the mid-tide mark.
