Common Dove Snail (also known as the Well-ribbed Dove Shell)
Phylum: Mollusca, Class: Gastropoda, Order: Neogastropoda, Family: Columbellidae, Genus: Anachis, Species: A. avara · Columbellidae (Dove Shell family) · Gastropod (snail/univalve), whole shell, spiral shape

Species
Anachis avara (or similar Columbellidae species)
Shell Type
Gastropod (snail/univalve), whole shell, spiral shape
Family
Columbellidae (Dove Shell family)
Size
Approximately 0.5 inches (12-15 mm) long, which is typical for this adult species whose range is generally 0.4 to 0.7 inches.
Color & Pattern
Faded whitish to light grayish-tan base with subtle hints of brownish reticulated patterns or banding near the suture. The colors are heavily sun-bleached and worn from wave action, obscuring the original crisp chestnut brown zig-zags and mottling typical of fresh specimens.
Rarity
Common, frequently found washed ashore in shell drift along southeastern US and Gulf of Mexico beaches.
Habitat
Shallow subtidal zones, intertidal areas, and seagrass beds, frequently found crawling among algae, rocks, and shell rubble in marine environments.
Geographic Range
Western Atlantic Ocean, ranging from North Carolina down through Florida, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Caribbean Sea.
Description
A small, sturdy, spindle-shaped gastropod shell featuring a relatively high spired apex, a somewhat inflated body whorl, and a narrow aperture. The surface shows faint axial ribs on the upper whorls, though wear has smoothed much of the original fine sculptural detail.
Key Features
Small fusiform shape, thickened outer lip with tiny denticles on the interior (typical of the family), a short siphonal canal, and characteristic compact proportions with a pointed spire.
Collector Value
Low commercial value due to its common abundance and weathered condition, but valued as a pleasant micro-shell find for amateur beachcombers and beginner collections.
Condition Notes
Worn and weathered condition, graded as Fair. The specimen is completely sun-bleached with loss of glossy finish and original color patterns, showing minor surface abrasion from tumbling in the surf.
Interesting Facts
Dove snails are active little scavengers and grazers that feed on microscopic algae and detritus. Despite their tiny size, Columbellidae are known for their surprisingly rapid movements when disturbed.
Ecological Role
Acts as an important micro-grazer controlling algal growth on seagrasses and rocks, serving as a foundational food source for small fish and predatory invertebrates in the nearshore food web.
Similar Species
Other dove snails in the family Columbellidae, such as Nitidella nitida (Glossy Dove Shell) or Costoanachis spp., which can be distinguished by finer differences in ribbing, aperture shape, and glossiness.
Beach Finding Tips
Look in high-tide shell drift lines, particularly where fine shell gravel and weed debris accumulate on sandy beaches. Using a magnifying glass or sorting through shell sand by hand yields the best results.
