Common Periwinkle (Edible Periwinkle)

Species

Littorina littorea

Shell Type

Gastropod (univalve), whole shell, spiral shape

Family

Littorinidae (Periwinkle family)

Size

Approximately 15 millimeters in length and width. Adults typically range from 10 to 30 millimeters, making this specimen a typical adult size.

Color & Pattern

Dark brown to grayish-black base coloration with fine, subtle spiral banding and darker growth lines. The interior aperture is a smooth, glossy dark brown to purple-black with a white inner columella. Colors appear completely natural and well-preserved.

Rarity

Very Common

Habitat

Found primarily in the intertidal zone on rocky shores, jetties, piers, and mudflats. They cling tightly to rocks and seaweed in the high to mid-tide zones. This is a marine to brackish water species.

Geographic Range

Native to the rocky shores of the North Atlantic, including northwestern Europe. Introduced to northeastern North America, where it now ranges extensively from Labrador down to New Jersey.

Description

A classic, sturdy little marine snail shell with a solid, turbinate or conical spire consisting of about six convex whorls. The surface features fine, microscopic spiral striations and distinct growth lines. The aperture is rounded-ovate and leads into a simple outer lip. Its compact, robust architecture is perfectly evolved to withstand heavy wave action on rocky coastlines.

Key Features

Solid, thick-walled turbinate shape; dark brown or banded exterior; smooth rounded-ovate aperture without a siphonal canal; distinct lack of an umbilicus in adults.

Collector Value

Low commercial value due to high abundance, but a staple reference specimen for beginner shell collections and educational displays. Typically found for pennies or collected for free.

Condition Notes

The shell is intact, whole, and in good condition with strong natural coloration and minimal wear. Collector grade is Good to Fine.

Interesting Facts

Littorina littorea is a popular food source in Europe, often harvested and eaten as a seafood delicacy known as winkles. They are hearty grazzers that scrape microscopic algae off rocks using a specialized ribbon-like tongue called a radula.

Ecological Role

Acts as a primary herbivore grazing on microalgae, preventing algal overgrowth on rocky intertidal surfaces. Serves as a food source for shorebirds, crabs, and fish.

Similar Species

Rough Periwinkle (Littorina saxatilis) and Smooth Periwinkle (Littorina obtusata). Littorina saxatilis is smaller with rougher texture, while Littorina obtusata has a broader, flatter spire and often bright yellow or olive-green coloration.

Beach Finding Tips

Search rocky intertidal zones, tide pools, and around the base of boulders or seaweed during low tide. They are often found in large colonies clustered together.
