Description

This is a sturdy, smooth, asymmetrical oval bivalve valve characterized by a high gloss finish and subtle concentric growth rings. The standout feature is a perfectly round, clean-bored hole drilled squarely through the center of the valve, a definitive signature of a predatory moon shell (Naticidae) or carnivorous gastropod that bored through the shell to consume the soft tissue within.

Key Features

Smooth, polished exterior texture, distinctive concentric color banding, ovate-elongated shape, and most importantly, a circular predatory bore hole located near the central umbo region.

Collector Value

Low to Moderate commercial value, but high sentimental and educational value for beachcombers. While the species itself is extremely common and commercially harvested in some regions, specimens with clean, perfectly centered natural predator drill holes are favored by crafters and amateur shell collectors.

Condition Notes

Good condition. The valve is structurally intact with a smooth margin, no chips or cracks along the edge, and retains much of its natural glossy luster. However, it features a classic natural predator drill hole, making it a wonderful educational specimen rather than a pristine gem collection piece.

Interesting Facts

The perfectly circular hole in the shell is created by a predatory moon snail. The snail secretes acid and uses a rasping organ called a radula to drill through the hard calcium carbonate shell of the clam to feed on the soft animal inside. Humans often drill similar holes to string shells for jewelry, but naturally drilled shells are a fascinating snapshot of marine predation.

Venus clams serve as an important food source for marine predators, including large rays, sharks, carnivorous gastropods (like moon snails), and sea birds. They help filter nutrients from the water column, contributing to coastal water clarity.

Similar Species

Sunray Venus clam (Macrocallista nimbosa) can be confused with other large venus clams such as the Chione or Mercenaria species, but is easily distinguished by its smoother surface, elongated shape, and distinct pinkish-orange ray or band patterns.

Beach Finding Tips

Look along high-energy sandy beaches during low tide, especially following strong storms or rough wave action. Walk along the wrack line where light, buoyant shells and single valves are deposited by the receding surf.
