Measled Cowrie (Also known as the Atlantic Measled Cowrie)

Species

Macrocypraea zebra

Shell Type

Gastropod, whole shell, oval-cylindrical shape

Family

Cypraeidae (Cowrie family)

Size

Approximately 2.5 to 3 inches in length, which is slightly below average for adult specimens of this species which typically range from 3 to 5 inches.

Color & Pattern

The dorsum features a rich grayish-brown or purplish-brown base color overlaid with three distinct paler transverse bands, and is heavily sprinkled with numerous bluish-white spots ringed with darker brown (giving the 'measled' appearance). The margins and base are a warm brown with darker spots extending around the edges toward the narrow, toothed aperture.

Rarity

Uncommon to Rare as a beach find, as they prefer deeper reef crevices and are usually only found washed ashore after severe storms.

Habitat

Found in shallow tropical and subtropical waters, typically residing in coral reefs, rocky areas, and under large coral slabs or boulders, ranging from the intertidal zone down to about 30 meters deep.

Geographic Range

Western Atlantic Ocean, including the coast of southeastern Florida, the Florida Keys, the Caribbean Sea, the Bahamas, and south along the coast of Brazil.

Description

An exquisite and smooth porcelain-like shell featuring a glossy finish characteristic of cowries. The oblong-oval body is robust with a slightly flattened base. The dorsal surface displays a captivating pattern of purplish-brown tones mottled with whitish, dark-rimmed ocelli (spots). The aperture is long, narrow, and flanked by fine teeth along both the outer and inner lips.

Key Features

Smooth, polished dorsal surface lacking visible spires in adulthood; distinctive 'measled' pattern of blue-white spots encircled by dark brown rings; and the long, narrow, toothed aperture characteristic of the Cypraeidae family.

Collector Value

Moderately high desirability among shell collectors due to its striking pattern and large size compared to other Atlantic cowries. Specimens in gem condition with rich color can command a respectable price in the collector market.

Condition Notes

The specimen appears to be in Fine to Gem condition with excellent gloss, intact natural coloration, and no major structural fractures or visible predator boring holes.

Interesting Facts

Living cowries have a mantle that extends out to cover the shell, which keeps the surface polished and free of algae or barnacles. In the past, certain cowrie shells were used extensively as a form of currency in various cultures around the world.

Ecological Role

As nocturnal grazers, they play an important role in reef ecosystems by feeding on algae, sponges, and detritus, helping to maintain the health of benthic habitats. They serve as prey for large carnivorous fish, octopuses, and specialized predatory sea snails.

Similar Species

Atlantic Deer Cowrie (Macrocypraea cervus), which is generally larger, more elongated, and has white spots that often lack the distinct dark brown rings found on the Measled Cowrie.

Beach Finding Tips

Look along Caribbean and southern Floridian beaches following heavy tropical storms or rough seas that churn up offshore coral reefs and deposit debris along the high-tide line.
