Interesting Facts
Venus clams get their name from Venus, the Roman goddess of love, as many members of this family are considered among the most attractive marine shells. They are active burrowers using a muscular foot.
Ecological Role
Serves as a filter feeder, helping to clear organic particles from the water column. Acts as an important food source for marine predators such as rays, large gastropods, and carnivorous crabs.
Similar Species
Sunray Venus (Macrocallista nimbosa), which is larger and features distinct reddish-brown radial rays rather than spots and blotches.
Beach Finding Tips
Look along sandy outer beaches and near inlets in North Carolina, especially after winter storms or heavy wave action that disturbs offshore sandbars.
