Ponderous Ark (also known as the Blood Ark or Heavy Ark)

Phylum: Mollusca, Class: Bivalvia, Order: Arcida, Family: Noetiidae, Genus: Noetia, Species: N. ponderosa · Noetiidae (Noetiid Arks) · Bivalve (clams/two-shelled mollusk). This specimen is a single valve (half). The shape is roughly heart-shaped/cordate when viewed from the side and sub-quadrate/triangular from the top.

Ponderous Ark (also known as the Blood Ark or Heavy Ark)

Species

Noetia ponderosa

Shell Type

Bivalve (clams/two-shelled mollusk). This specimen is a single valve (half). The shape is roughly heart-shaped/cordate when viewed from the side and sub-quadrate/triangular from the top.

Family

Noetiidae (Noetiid Arks)

Size

Approximately 1.5 to 2 inches in length. This is a mid-sized juvenile or small adult specimen, as they typically reach 2.5 to 3 inches.

Color & Pattern

This specimen exhibits a charcoal gray to slate-blue coloration, which is characteristic of shells that have been buried in anaerobic (oxygen-poor) mud or silt, causing mineralization. The natural living color is white, usually covered by a thick, velvety black periostracum (outer skin).

Rarity

Very Common. These are staple finds on Atlantic and Gulf Coast beaches, particularly after storms.

Habitat

Commonly found in shallow marine waters, intertidal zones, and estuaries. They prefer soft substrates such as sand, mud, or silt where they can live partially buried.

Geographic Range

Western Atlantic coast from Virginia (USA) south to the Gulf of Mexico and down to the Caribbean and Brazil.

Description

A thick, heavy, and robust bivalve shell featuring prominent radial ribs (usually 25-30). The shell is noticeably asymmetrical with a high, coiled beak (umbo) that points toward the posterior. The exterior is deeply sculpted with squared-off ribs, while the interior hinge (though not fully visible) contains numerous small, fine teeth typical of the Ark family.

Key Features

The most diagnostic feature is the 'beaked' umbo that turns backward and the distinctly deep, squared-off radial ribs. The shell is significantly thicker and 'ponderous' (heavy) compared to other similar-sized clams.

Collector Value

Low monetary value ($1-$5) due to its abundance. However, they are highly valued by hobbyists for their durability and the unique heart-shape they form when both valves are joined. Darker 'fossilized' gray specimens like this one are popular for jewelry making.

Condition Notes

Good/Beached condition. The shell shows signs of natural tumbling in the surf. It lacks the original black periostracum and has undergone color alteration due to sediment burial. There are minor abrasions on the ribs. Grade: Good.

Interesting Facts

Unlike most mollusks which have clear hemolymph, Arks in this group have red blood containing hemoglobin, which allows them to survive in low-oxygen environments (hence the name Blood Ark). The 'ponderous' name refers to the unusual thickness and weight of the valves.

Ecological Role

Filter feeders that help clear the water of particulate matter. They serve as a food source for gastropods like whelks and for various species of crabs and sea stars. They are not currently a species of conservation concern.

Similar Species

Incongruous Ark (Anadara brasiliana) which is more rounded and has 'beaded' ribs, and the Blood Ark (Anadara ovalis) which has a more oval shape and lacks the high, twisted beak of the Noetia ponderosa.

Beach Finding Tips

Look along the high-tide line after a storm or strong onshore winds. Because they are heavy, they often settle in 'shell pockets' with other weighted items like stones and large whelk fragments.
