Habitat

Found in shallow intertidal zones, mudflats, estuaries, and salt marshes. Extensively present in intertidal sand-mud sediments along soft-bottom coasts.

Western Atlantic coast of North America, ranging from Nova Scotia, Canada, down to northern Florida. Extensively found along the coast of South Carolina, including Myrtle Beach.

Description

A heavily weathered and mineralized gastropod spire specimen featuring distinctive stepped suture lines and rounded nuclear whorls. The body whorl is partially encased in a hardened sediment matrix or calcified encrustation, giving it a fossil-like or stone appearance.

Look along the wrack line and shallow tide pools after high tide, or search through shell gravel beds after storms along Myrtle Beach, where older fossil-bearing layers wash ashore.
