Dove Snail / Dove Shell
Phylum: Mollusca, Class: Gastropoda, Order: Neogastropoda, Family: Columbellidae, Genus: Columbella, Species: Columbella mercatoria · Columbellidae (Dove snail family) · Gastropod (univalve snail), whole shell, ovate to fusiform spiral shape

Species
Columbella mercatoria (Common Dove Shell)
Shell Type
Gastropod (univalve snail), whole shell, ovate to fusiform spiral shape
Family
Columbellidae (Dove snail family)
Size
Approximately 12-15 mm (0.5 inches) in length, which is average to large for this species. Adults typically range from 8 to 15 mm.
Color & Pattern
Base color is off-white to cream, featuring distinctive reddish-brown or chestnut blotches, irregular zigzag patterns, and spiral bands. The colors appear slightly sun-bleached and worn from wave action, typical of beach-found specimens.
Rarity
Common; frequently found washed ashore on Caribbean and South Florida beaches.
Habitat
Found in shallow intertidal and subtidal zones, typically on rocky shores, coral rubble, and amongst algae or seagrass beds in marine environments.
Geographic Range
Widespread throughout the tropical Western Atlantic, including the Caribbean Sea, the Bahamas, southern Florida, and the Gulf of Mexico.
Description
This is a charming and compact marine snail shell featuring a sturdy, thick structure with a low spire, distinct body whorl, and a denticulate (toothed) outer lip typical of the Columbellidae family. The surface exhibits characteristic low spiral ridges and nodes, adorned with mottled brownish markings over a pale background.
Key Features
Stout, ovate shell shape; thickened outer aperture lip lined with small denticles (teeth); low spire; and mottled brown-and-white color patterns.
Collector Value
Low to moderate commercial value, highly popular among beginner beachcombers and shell crafters rather than advanced specialist collectors. Usually sold in bulk or kept as a pleasant memento.
Condition Notes
Good condition for a beach-worn specimen. The shell is intact with moderate surface wear and fading due to wave tumbling, but the overall shape, sculpture, and aperture features remain clearly visible. Grade: Good.
Interesting Facts
Dove snails are remarkably active for their small size and glide rapidly over algae-covered rocks and surfaces using a muscular foot. Despite their delicate appearance, their shells are remarkably thick and heavy for their size to withstand wave shock.
Ecological Role
Columbellids are primarily herbivorous or scavenger grazers, feeding on microalgae and detritus on rocks and plants, serving as an important food source for small fish and predatory invertebrates.
Similar Species
Other Columbella species such as Columbella rusticoides (Rust-stained Dove Shell), which tends to be more elongated and patterned differently.
Beach Finding Tips
Look in shell drift lines, among coral rubble, or sift through fine shell grit on tropical beaches during low tide, particularly after storms.
