Species

Macrocallista nimbosa

Shell Type

Bivalve (two-shelled clam), whole single valve, fan-shaped

Family

Veneridae (Venus clam family)

Size

Approximately 1 inch in length, representing a juvenile or smaller specimen. Adults typically range from 3 to 5 inches in length.

Color & Pattern

Glossy exterior featuring a creamy or pale yellowish-beige base color with prominent, distinct darker brownish-orange or reddish-purple concentric bands running parallel to the growth margins. The colors are natural and glossy, showcasing smooth radial growth lines.

Rarity

Common, frequently found washed up on Gulf and Atlantic beaches of Florida, though pristine multi-colored specimens are always treasured.

Habitat

Found buried in fine sand or muddy sand substrates in shallow subtidal waters, typically ranging from the intertidal zone down to about 50 feet deep in marine environments.

Geographic Range

Western Atlantic Ocean, primarily along the southeastern coast of the United States from North Carolina down through Florida, and extending into the Gulf of Mexico.

Description

An attractive, smooth, and glossy bivalve shell with an elongated oval to slightly triangular fan shape. The exterior displays fine, subtle concentric growth lines and a striking banded pattern of warm orange-brown hues against a lighter background. The margin is smooth, and the beak (umbo) is prominent and slightly curved.

Good to Fine condition. The valve is intact with no major chips or fractures. The glossy surface is well-preserved with natural coloration intact, showing minimal signs of beach wear or sun-bleaching.

Interesting Facts

The Macrocallista nimbosa is known for having some of the most vibrant and aesthetically pleasing color patterns among Atlantic bivalves. The species name 'nimbosa' means cloudy or stormy, referencing the cloudy or banded appearance of its color patterns.

Ecological Role

Functions as a filter feeder, extracting phytoplankton and organic particles from the water column, thereby helping to maintain water clarity. Serves as a food source for marine predators such as rays, large gastropods, and crabs.

Similar Species

Sunburst Venus (Macrocallista maculata), which features a mottled or spotted zigzag pattern rather than solid concentric bands, and other smaller venerid clams.

Beach Finding Tips

Look along high-tide wrack lines on sandy ocean-facing beaches, particularly after storms or heavy wave action. Search beaches in southwest Florida and the Florida Panhandle during early morning low tides.
