Dove Shell (also known as Common Dove Snail)
Phylum: Mollusca, Class: Gastropoda, Order: Neogastropoda, Family: Columbellidae, Genus: Columbella, Species: Columbella mercatoria · Columbellidae (Dove snail family) · Gastropod, whole shell, spiral shape

Species
Columbella mercatoria
Shell Type
Gastropod, whole shell, spiral shape
Family
Columbellidae (Dove snail family)
Size
Approximately 1/2 inch (10-15 mm), which is typical for an adult of this species. Adults generally range between 8 mm and 20 mm.
Color & Pattern
Whitish to cream base color with faint brownish or yellowish bands and a finely textured grid pattern. The surface appears slightly sun-bleached and worn, displaying natural earthy tones typical of beach-cast specimens.
Rarity
Common, frequently found washed ashore in its native geographic range.
Habitat
Found in shallow marine environments, primarily intertidal and subtidal zones, among rocky shores, coral rubble, and algae beds.
Geographic Range
Widespread in the tropical Western Atlantic, including the Caribbean Sea, the Florida Keys, the Bahamas, and along the coast of Central and South America.
Description
A small, sturdy, stout gastropod shell featuring a distinct low spire and a relatively large body whorl. The surface is adorned with delicate spiral cords and axial riblets creating a cancellated or checkered texture. The outer lip is slightly thickened and typically has inner denticles.
Key Features
Stout, compact oval-oblong shape, low pointed spire, cancellate (grid-like) surface sculpture, and a narrow aperture with a denticulated outer lip.
Collector Value
Low to moderate individual monetary value, but popular among micro-shell collectors and as part of beginner beach-combing collections. Usually traded or sold as part of mixed shell craft lots.
Condition Notes
Good to Fair condition for a beach find. The shell is intact with some minor surface wear and fading due to exposure, but the structural integrity and sculptural details remain well-defined.
Interesting Facts
Dove snails are active little marine snails that graze on microalgae and detritus. Despite their tiny size, they possess a strong muscular foot that allows them to cling tightly to rocks in high-energy surf zones.
Ecological Role
Plays an important role in intertidal ecosystems as an algal grazer, helping control microalgal growth. They also serve as a food source for small fish, crabs, and carnivorous gastropods.
Similar Species
Other members of the Columbellidae family, such as Pyrene or Nitidella species, which can be distinguished by subtle variations in aperture shape, color patterns, and finer sculptural details.
Beach Finding Tips
Look in shell drift lines along rocky or coral-rich tropical beaches, particularly at low tide. Sifting through fine shell gravel and sand near the wrack line often yields good results.
