Species
Naria felina (formerly Cypraea felina)
Shell Type
Gastropod (snail/univalve), whole shell, ovate to pyriform shape
Family
Cypraeidae (Cowrie family)
Size
Approximately 15-20 mm, which is average for this species. Adults typically range from 10 to 25 mm.
Color & Pattern
Smooth, glossy dorsum with a brownish-grey to olive base color, featuring faint lateral spots and characteristic dark terminal blotches at both ends. The base and margins are white. Colors are completely natural with high gloss polish typical of live-collected or pristine beach-worn cowries.
Rarity
Common, frequently found by dedicated beachcombers and reef walkers within its natural range.
Habitat
Found in shallow intertidal and subtidal zones, typically associated with coral reefs, under coral rubble, and in rocky crevices.
Geographic Range
Indo-West Pacific region, ranging from the East African coast and the Red Sea through the Indian Ocean to Southeast Asia and Australia.
Description
A small, sturdy, and highly polished cowrie shell with a distinctively flattened base and rounded dorsal hump. The margins are slightly thickened, and the narrow aperture is lined with fine, delicate teeth along both the outer and inner lips. The dorsal surface possesses a high natural porcelain-like gloss.
Key Features
Small size, ovate shape, flattened base, distinctive dark terminal spots at the anterior and posterior extremities, and fine apertural teeth.
Collector Value
Modest value, highly popular among beginner to intermediate shell collectors due to its attractive patterns and manageable size. Typically sold affordably in shell shops.
Condition Notes
Excellent condition. The shell is intact with strong gloss, no major fractures, and good retention of natural coloration. Collectibility grade: Fine to Gem.
Interesting Facts
Like all cowries, the living snail covers its shell with a specialized mantle tissue while active, which deposits shiny layers of calcium carbonate and prevents algae growth, resulting in the shell's permanent polished appearance.
Ecological Role
Grazer that feeds primarily on algae and detritus on coral reefs, helping to maintain reef health. Preyed upon by specialized marine gastropods, fish, and crustaceans.
Similar Species
Naria erosa (Eroded Cowrie), which is generally larger with more prominent lateral callus spots, and other small Indo-Pacific cowries of similar size and shape.
Beach Finding Tips
Look under loose coral rocks, flat stones, and in rubble zones during extreme low tides in tropical Indo-Pacific regions.
