Marlin Spike Auger (also known as the Marlinspike or Terebra maculata)

Species

Terebra maculata

Shell Type

Gastropod (univalve), whole shell, elongated spiral shape

Family

Terebridae (Auger family)

Size

Approximately 4 to 5 inches in length, which is a medium-to-large size for this species. Adults typically range from 3 to 7 inches, with exceptionally large specimens reaching up to 9 inches.

Color & Pattern

The base color is creamy-white to pale yellowish-tan. Marked by distinct rows of square or rectangular brownish-orange to dark brown spots or blotches aligned in spiral bands around each whorl. The coloration is natural and glossy with typical wear near the apex.

Rarity

Common within its natural geographic range, frequently collected by snorkelers and beachcombers in tropical regions.

Habitat

Inhabits shallow subtidal and intertidal zones, typically found buried in clean sandy substrates, sand flats, and around coral reefs down to depths of about 30 meters.

Geographic Range

Indo-West Pacific region, ranging from East Africa and the Red Sea through the Indian Ocean to Polynesia, Hawaii, and Australia.

Description

An elegant, highly elongated auger shell featuring numerous flat-sided whorls that taper gracefully to a sharp apex. The surface is smooth and polished with faint spiral grooves. The aperture is relatively small and ovate, leading to a short, notched anterior canal typical of predatory auger snails.

Key Features

Distinguished by its large size for an auger, the relatively smooth and flat-sided whorls, and the characteristic rows of square brownish spots arranged in spiral bands just below the sutures.

Collector Value

Moderately valued by collectors as a classic representative of the Terebridae family. Common specimens are very affordable, typically ranging from $5 to $15 depending on size and condition.

Condition Notes

Good condition. The shell is intact with most of its original pattern preserved, though showing minor natural abrasion and slight fading near the tip.

Interesting Facts

Auger snails are carnivorous predators that hunt marine worms using a specialized radula tooth that delivers a potent venom to immobilize their prey. Terebra maculata is one of the largest species in the auger family.

Ecological Role

Plays an important role as a sand-dwelling carnivore helping to regulate marine worm populations. It serves as prey for larger fish and bottom-feeding predators.

Similar Species

Other large auger species such as Terebra guttata (which features white spots on a brown background) and Hastula species, which are generally smaller and differently proportioned.

Beach Finding Tips

Look along tropical sandy beaches and sand bars at low tide, or snorkel in shallow sandy areas near coral reefs where living specimens bury themselves just beneath the surface.
