Black Scallop (also known as the Puritanic Scallop or Smooth Scallop)

Species

Flexopecten glaber

Shell Type

Bivalve, whole shell with fan shape

Family

Pectinidae (Scallop family)

Size

Approximately 1.5 to 2 inches in width, which is average for this species. Adults typically range between 1.5 and 2.5 inches.

Color & Pattern

Deep purplish-brown to nearly black coloration with subtle darker radial banding. The colors appear natural and well-preserved, showing typical darker morph characteristics common in European waters.

Rarity

Common

Habitat

Shallow subtidal to intertidal zones, typically found on sandy, muddy, or seagrass bottoms in protected bays and lagoons, from low tide mark down to about 30 meters.

Geographic Range

Eastern Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea, and extending along the coast of Portugal, including the Algarve region near Lagos.

Description

A classic fan-shaped bivalve featuring prominent, rounded radial ribs running from the umbo to the outer margin. The auricles (ears) at the hinge are somewhat asymmetrical, and the margins show fine crenulations matching the external rib structure. The texture is sturdy with a matte finish.

Key Features

Rounded radial ribs (typically around 10 to 14), nearly equilateral fan shape, distinct unequal auricles at the straight hinge line, and dark pigmentation.

Collector Value

Low to moderate commercial value, widely collected by beachcombers in Europe as a pleasant souvenir, though dark-pigmented specimens are appreciated for color displays.

Condition Notes

Good condition. Intact single valve or tightly closed pair, showing minimal wear on the ribs and good retention of its dark natural coloration. Grade: Good to Fine.

Interesting Facts

Like other scallops, Flexopecten glaber possesses dozens of simple blue eyes along the mantle edge that can detect light and shadow. They are capable of swimming short distances by rapidly clapping their valves together to expel water.

Ecological Role

Acts as an active filter feeder, improving water clarity by consuming phytoplankton. Serves as an important food source for bottom-feeding fish, crabs, and starfish.

Similar Species

Flexopecten varius (Variegated Scallop), which generally features more irregular, highly variable bright colors and rougher scaly ribs rather than the smoother appearance of F. glaber.

Beach Finding Tips

Look along sandy or shelly beaches near rocky outcrops or seagrass meadows in the Algarve region after storms or during extreme low spring tides.
