Lettered Olive

Species

Oliva sayana

Shell Type

Gastropod (Marine Snail); Cylindrical/Oval spiral shape. This is a whole shell showing the characteristic low spire and elongated aperture.

Family

Olividae (Olive shells)

Size

Approximately 2.5 inches (6.3 cm) in length. This is average for an adult specimen, which typically ranges from 2 to 3.5 inches.

Color & Pattern

Base color is a creamy grey-tan, featuring distinct reddish-brown zigzag or 'letter-like' markings. The illustrated specimen shows some sun-bleaching, giving it a slightly cooler, lavender-grey hue. The interior (aperture) is a smooth, glossy cream to light purple.

Rarity

Common. These are frequently found on beaches throughout the Southeastern United States, particularly after storms or during low tides.

Habitat

Intertidal and shallow subtidal zones. They prefer sandy substrates where they can burrow just beneath the surface to hunt for prey.

Geographic Range

Western Atlantic; commonly found from North Carolina to Florida, the Gulf of Mexico, and down to Brazil.

Description

A beautiful, highly polished cylindrical shell with a smooth, glossy texture and a very short spire. The body whorl is elongated and covers most of the shell. It features a distinctive 'channeled' suture (the line where whorls meet) and a notched anterior canal. The surface is famous for its intricate, map-like patterns reminiscent of ancient script.

Key Features

Cylindrical shape, high gloss finish (natural, not polished by humans), 'channeled' deep suture near the spire, long narrow aperture, and the characteristic zigzag chevron pattern.

Collector Value

Low for beach-worn specimens ($1-$5), but high-quality 'gem' specimens with deep coloration and perfect lips are prized by beginners and specialized olive collectors alike.

Condition Notes

Good/Fair. The shell is intact with a minor chip near the posterior end of the aperture. The colors appear somewhat faded or 'beach-worn' due to sun exposure and tumbling in the surf, but the diagnostic patterns are still visible.

Interesting Facts

Lettered Olives are carnivores that hunt small bivalves and crustaceans under the sand. The living animal has a large, fleshy foot that it uses to glide through the sand. It is the state shell of South Carolina.

Ecological Role

Active predator in the sandy benthic community. They help regulate populations of small coquina clams and other tiny invertebrates. They are a food source for larger crabs and some predatory fish.

Similar Species

Oliva reticularis (Netted Olive), which is usually smaller and found further south in the Caribbean; and Oliva fulgurator, which has more varied patterning.

Beach Finding Tips

Best found at low tide on sandbars or just at the water's edge. Look for a 'V' shaped trail in the wet sand, which indicates the snail is burrowing just beneath the surface.
