Species
Macrocypraea zebra
Shell Type
Gastropod (snail/univalve), whole shell, smooth ovate shape
Family
Cypraeidae (Cowrie family)
Size
Approximately 2 to 3 inches in length. Adults typically range between 2.5 to 4 inches, making this specimen on the smaller to average side.
Color & Pattern
Rich chestnut-brown base color overlaid with numerous white spots or 'measles' circled by darker rings, blending into a lighter brownish-gray pattern. The base and margins are a darker, rich brown. Natural high-gloss porcelain shine on the exterior.
Rarity
Uncommon to Rare as a live-taken beach find, as they tend to hide in deep crevices during the day, though worn beach specimens occasionally turn up.
Habitat
Found in shallow subtidal waters, typically in coral reefs, rocky areas, and under coral ledges or boulders, usually from the intertidal zone down to about 30 meters depth.
Geographic Range
Western Atlantic Ocean, including the Caribbean Sea, the Bahamas, southern Florida, and along the coast of Central and South America to Brazil.
Description
A stunning and classic cowrie shell featuring a smooth, highly polished, ovate dorsum. The pattern consists of prominent white spots ringed with darker brown against a warm brownish background, resembling measles. The base is flattened with toothed margins along a narrow, long aperture.
Key Features
The distinctive 'measled' pattern of white spots ringed with brown, combined with a smooth, glossy, elongated-oval shape and brownish margins.
Collector Value
Moderately high desirability among cowrie collectors due to its large size and attractive pattern. Clean, high-gloss specimens are prized in collections.
Condition Notes
Gem to Fine condition with excellent natural gloss and vivid coloration, showing minimal wear and no major structural damage.
Interesting Facts
Like all cowries, the living animal possesses a mantle that covers the shell to keep it polished and free of algae. They are primarily nocturnal grazes that feed on sponges and algae.
Ecological Role
Plays an important role in reef ecosystems by grazing on sponges and algae, helping to maintain benthic community balance. Collected responsibly as populations are vulnerable to over-harvesting.
Similar Species
Atlantic Deer Cowrie (Macrocypraea cervus), which is generally larger and features more rounded, less distinct spotting patterns.
Beach Finding Tips
Best found by snorkeling or scuba diving around coral reefs and rocky outcrops at night when they emerge to feed, or searching deep shell drifts after major storms.
