Lettered Olive

Species

Americoliva sayana (formerly Oliva sayana)

Shell Type

Gastropod; whole shell; cylindrical/spiral shape

Family

Olividae (Olive shell family)

Size

Approximately 2 to 2.5 inches in length. This is an average adult size, as the species typically ranges from 1.5 to 3.5 inches.

Color & Pattern

Glossy cream to tan base color with distinctive reddish-brown zig-zag or 'V' shaped markings that resemble hieroglyphics or letters. Features three darker horizontal bands of these markings. The apex is a pale lilac or white, and the interior aperture is typically a creamy white to light tan.

Rarity

Common; one of the most frequently found shells on the beaches of the Southeastern United States, though finding a 'gem' specimen with a perfect lip is more difficult.

Habitat

Found in shallow marine waters, typically from the intertidal zone to depths of 20 meters. They prefer sandy substrates where they can burrow just beneath the surface.

Geographic Range

Western Atlantic, stretching from North Carolina down through Florida, the Gulf of Mexico, to the Yucatan Peninsula and Brazil.

Description

A highly polished, cylindrical shell with a short, pointed spire and a long, narrow aperture. The surface is naturally glossy because the snail's mantle covers and protects the shell while it is active. The suture is deeply channeled, and the columella features numerous folds or plications at the base.

Key Features

Highly glossy finish even without polishing; zig-zag 'lettered' patterns; channeled suture; cylindrical body whorl with a short spire; lacks an operculum in adult stages.

Collector Value

Low to Moderate ($2 - $10). While beautiful and popular, their abundance makes them affordable. Large specimens exceeding 3 inches or those with unique 'golden' color variations (the 'citrina' form) are more valuable to collectors.

Condition Notes

Good to Fine condition. The gloss is well-preserved, suggesting it was not tumbled in the surf for long. There is slight chipping apparent on the anterior canal/lip area. No significant predator boreholes are visible.

Interesting Facts

The Lettered Olive is the state shell of South Carolina. The animal is a predatory carnivore that hunts bivalves and small crustaceans under the sand. It also acts as a scavenger, using its keen sense of smell to locate food.

Ecological Role

Active predator and scavenger in the sandy benthos. They help control populations of small invertebrates. They are a food source for larger predators like crabs and Gulls. Not currently listed as endangered.

Similar Species

Netted Olive (Oliva reticularis), which is generally smaller with a more reticulated, net-like pattern and is found primarily in the Caribbean.

Beach Finding Tips

Look at low tide along the 'wash' line. They are often found by spotting a small 'V-shaped' trail in the wet sand where the snail has burrowed. Best found after storms or during extreme low tides on sandy Florida or Carolina beaches.
