Color & Pattern
Dull off-white to grayish exterior with weathered pale yellow and chalky white patches. The colors are heavily sun-bleached and natural due to environmental exposure. The interior (if visible) tends to be porcelain white with a characteristic dark purple or brown adductor muscle scar.

Very Common. Oysters are extremely abundant along estuarine coastlines and wash ashore frequently, though well-preserved single valves like this are a common beach find.
Habitat
Found in marine and brackish estuarine waters, typically forming dense reefs or beds in intertidal and shallow subtidal zones down to about 20 feet. They attach firmly to hard substrates such as rocks, docks, or other oyster shells.

Description
This is a heavily weathered, solid lower valve of an oyster shell, exhibiting the characteristically thick, rugged exterior and deeply cupped form used to anchor the animal to the substrate. The surface displays strong, coarse radial growth folds and irregular ridges formed as the animal expands its shell over time. The texture is chalky, dense, and heavily worn from wave action.

Collector Value
Low collectible value. While they are fascinating biological specimens and vital to marine ecosystems, they are too common to hold monetary value for shell collectors, though they are heavily collected for craft purposes and culinary reasons.
Condition Notes
Fair to Good condition for a beach-worn specimen. The shell is structurally intact as a single valve, but it shows significant surface wear, chalkiness, and complete loss of any periostracum. Edges are blunted by wave tumbling.
Interesting Facts
Eastern oysters are incredible filter feeders, capable of filtering up to 50 gallons of water a day, which naturally cleans and clarifies estuaries. They are also famous for occasionally producing pearls, though edible pearls lack the luster of gemstone pearls found in pearl oysters.
