Dove Shell (also known as a Doved-shelled snail or Columbellid)
Phylum: Mollusca, Class: Gastropoda, Order: Neogastropoda, Family: Columbellidae, Genus: Columbella, Species: Columbella mercatoria · Columbellidae (Dove Shell family) · Gastropod, whole shell, oval-turbinate shape with a low spire.

Species
Columbella mercatoria (Common Atlantic Dove Shell)
Shell Type
Gastropod, whole shell, oval-turbinate shape with a low spire.
Family
Columbellidae (Dove Shell family)
Size
Approximately 1/2 inch (12-15 mm), which is typical for an adult of this species. Adults generally range from 8 to 20 mm.
Color & Pattern
Cream to off-white base color ornamented with characteristic reddish-brown to dark brown rectangular spots, chevrons, and mottled spiral bands. The markings are sharp and natural. The interior aperture is generally narrow with denticles on the inner and outer lips.
Rarity
Common; frequently encountered by beachcombers and snorkelers in its native tropical range.
Habitat
Found primarily in shallow intertidal and subtidal zones, often dwelling on rocky substrates, algae-covered stones, coral rubble, and seagrass beds in warm, tropical to subtropical marine environments.
Geographic Range
Western Atlantic Ocean, including the Caribbean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico, Florida, Bermuda, and down through the West Indies to northern South America.
Description
A small, sturdy, and glossy marine snail shell with a robust, thick-walled structure. It features a short, pointed spire, an inflated body whorl, and fine spiral striations near the base. The outer lip is thickened and distinctly denticulated (toothed) on the interior, a hallmark of the family.
Key Features
Small, stout, glossy profile; short spire; distinctive dark brown or reddish square spots and zigzag markings on a pale background; heavily toothed (denticulate) outer aperture lip.
Collector Value
Low to moderate individual value due to their abundance, though they are popular among micro-shell collectors and crafters. High-grade, unusually colored, or exceptionally large specimen sets can be desirable.
Condition Notes
Good to Fine condition. The shell appears intact with well-preserved natural color patterns, minimal fading, and a smooth, glossy exterior finish without major structural damage or boring marks.
Interesting Facts
Dove shells are active little scavengers and grazers that feed on microalgae and organic detritus using a specialized radula. Despite their tiny size, their populations can be remarkably dense in healthy intertidal reef flats.
Ecological Role
Serves as an important micro-grazer controlling microalgal growth on reefs and shorelines. Acts as a small but vital food source for coastal fish and carnivorous gastropods.
Similar Species
Mitrella ocellata (Ocellated Dove Shell), which tends to be more elongated with distinct white spots on a dark background rather than dark spots on a pale background.
Beach Finding Tips
Look through shell drift lines, shell hash, and fine sand deposits along tropical and subtropical rocky shores or coral reef flats, particularly at low tide.
