Dove Shells (specifically mottled or variable dove shells)
Phylum: Mollusca, Class: Gastropoda, Order: Neogastropoda, Family: Columbellidae, Genus: Columbella, Species: Columbella mercatoria · Columbellidae (Dove snail family) · Gastropod (spiral shape, whole shells)

Species
Columbella mercatoria (or closely related Columbellidae species)
Shell Type
Gastropod (spiral shape, whole shells)
Family
Columbellidae (Dove snail family)
Size
Approximately 0.5 to 1 inch each, which is standard for adult dove shells within this family.
Color & Pattern
Mottled patterns featuring white, brown, cream, and tan flecks, dashes, and zig-zag lines. Colors appear natural with minor sun-bleaching on exposed surfaces.
Rarity
Very Common, frequently washed ashore in large numbers on beaches within their native range.
Habitat
Shallow intertidal and subtidal zones, commonly found hiding under rocks, in algal mats, and among coral rubble.
Geographic Range
Widespread across warm tropical and subtropical waters, including the Western Atlantic, Caribbean, and Gulf of Mexico.
Description
Small, robust, spindle-shaped gastropod shells with a relatively low spire, smooth to finely sculptured exterior surfaces, and a thickened outer lip that is often toothed on the interior.
Key Features
Compact spindle shape, glossy or patterned exterior, thickened outer lip with tiny denticles on the inner margin, and a short anterior canal.
Collector Value
Low commercial value individually, as they are very common. Highly prized by beachcombers and crafters for shell art, jewelry making, and starter collections.
Condition Notes
Fair to Good condition. Most shells are intact with minor beach wear, slight fading, and small natural abrasions; overall collectibility grade is Good for craft or beginner collections.
Interesting Facts
Dove snails are active little scavengers and grazers that use a specialized radula to feed on microalgae and detritus. Despite their tiny size, they can move quite rapidly when disturbed.
Ecological Role
They play an important role in controlling microalgae growth in intertidal rocky environments and serve as a food source for small fish, crabs, and carnivorous gastropods.
Similar Species
Other members of the Columbellidae family, such as Nitidella or Astyris species, which can be distinguished by subtle differences in spire height, aperture structure, and exact color patterns.
Beach Finding Tips
Look in high-tide shell lines, sift through fine shell grit and coral rubble, or check rock pools during low tide in tropical regions.
