An impressive, fused cluster of multiple Giant Acorn Barnacles showing heavily calcified, steep-sided conical walls with coarse vertical ribbing. The upper opercular openings are wide, exposing the deep, pale interiors. The calcareous plates are fused tightly together in a symbiotic or crowded colony formation, displaying the rugged, fortress-like architecture typical of mature specimens exposed to heavy surf.

Despite looking like mollusks, barnacles are actually sessile crustaceans closely related to crabs and lobsters. They have the largest penis relative to body size in the animal kingdom to reach neighboring barnacles for reproduction, and they were studied extensively by Charles Darwin during his seminal work on evolution.
