Size
Approximately 4 to 5 inches in length, which is typical for adult specimens of this species. Adults generally range from 3 to 7 inches.
Color & Pattern
Dull white to off-white exterior with faint brownish or yellowish periostracum remnants near the edges, and a smooth, pearlescent white interior. The colors appear natural but somewhat weathered and sun-bleached from exposure.
Rarity
Common to Very Common, frequently found washed ashore on sandy beaches after storms or heavy surf.
Habitat
Shallow subtidal and intertidal zones, buried vertically in fine sand or mud flats in marine and brackish environments.
Geographic Range
Originally native to the Northwest Atlantic coast of North America, from Labrador to Florida. It has also been introduced to and established along parts of the European coastline.
Description
An elongated, slender, and slightly curved bivalve shell resembling an old-fashioned straight razor or a knife sheath. The valves feature fine concentric growth lines and a prominent hinge line running along the straight dorsal margin, opening to reveal a smooth, glossy interior.

Interesting Facts
Razor clams are remarkably fast burrowers, capable of digging themselves deep into the sand in seconds using their muscular foot to escape predators. When disturbed at low tide, they can squirt jets of water from their burrows.
Ecological Role
Razor clams serve as an important food source for numerous shorebirds, fish, and crabs. As filter feeders, they help clarify coastal waters by consuming microscopic phytoplankton.
Similar Species
Ensis siliqua (European razor clam), which tends to be slightly more curved, and Solen marginatus, which has a more squared anterior margin.

Look along low-energy sandy beaches and tidal flats at low tide. Search near small keyhole-shaped or oblong holes in the sand left by the clam's siphons, or hunt after heavy storms when whole valves wash ashore.
