The specimen is a bleached, sun-whitened test showcasing a pale chalky white to light cream color. The upper surface features a prominent, perfectly defined central petaloid (flower-like pattern with five petals) made of tiny pores. The natural velvety, purple-brown spines and skin have completely worn away, revealing the underlying calcium carbonate skeleton.

Common, frequently found washed up on sandy beaches throughout its natural geographic range, especially after storms or heavy wave action.

Habitat

Found primarily in shallow subtidal and intertidal zones, typically inhabiting sandy or muddy bottoms in coastal marine environments. They prefer high-energy or protected sandy shores, often burying themselves just beneath the surface of the sand.

Description

This is a remarkable and structurally fascinating echinoid test characterized by its distinctly flattened, disc-like profile and signature lunules (slots or holes). The specimen displays a clearly etched central petaloid pattern on the aboral surface, consisting of five petal-like rows of respiratory pores radiating from the center. The smooth, velvety texture of the living animal is replaced by a chalky, porous skeleton featuring five characteristic elongated keyhole-like slots which help the animal anchor itself in shifting sand and allow water to flow freely.

Key Features

The presence of five distinct lunules (keyhole slots) penetrating through the test, coupled with the classic five-petaled petaloid pattern on the dorsal surface, distinctly separates this species from standard un-slotted sand dollars.

Collector Value

Very affordable and popular among beachcombers and casual shell and specimen collectors. Intact specimens without broken edges fetch nominal value, typically sold in souvenir shops or traded among hobbyists for a few dollars.

Condition Notes

The test is in good, intact condition with minor wear on the margins but complete structural integrity of all five keyhole slots. The color is completely bleached white due to sun exposure and lack of organic tissue. Graded as Good to Fine collectibility.

Interesting Facts

When alive, keyhole urchins are covered in thousands of microscopic, moving spines that give them a furry, purplish-brown appearance. They use these spines and tiny cilia to crawl along and burrow into the sand. The slots (lunules) help prevent the animal from being swept away by strong waves by allowing water to pass right through the body.
