Atlantic Deer Cowrie (also known as Measled Cowrie)
Phylum: Mollusca, Class: Gastropoda, Order: Littorinimorpha, Family: Cypraeidae, Genus: Macrocypraea, Species: Macrocypraea zebra · Cypraeidae (Cowrie family) · Gastropod (snail/univalve), whole shell with an oval, domed shape

Species
Macrocypraea zebra
Shell Type
Gastropod (snail/univalve), whole shell with an oval, domed shape
Family
Cypraeidae (Cowrie family)
Size
Approximately 1.5 to 2 inches based on visual context, which is small to average for a juvenile or sub-adult specimen; adult species typically range from 2.5 to 4 inches.
Color & Pattern
The dorsum displays a rich brown or chestnut base color overlaid with lighter, circular pale spots or blotches and faint bluish-white banding, characteristic of the species. The gloss is well-preserved with natural vitreous shine.
Rarity
Uncommon, as live specimens are nocturnal and hide deep in reef crevices during the day, making empty beach-worn shells a prized find.
Habitat
Found in shallow tropical to subtropical waters, typically residing in rocky areas, coral reefs, and under coral slabs or ledges from the intertidal zone down to about 30 meters.
Geographic Range
Western Atlantic Ocean, including the coast of Florida, the Bahamas, the Caribbean Sea, and down along the coast of Brazil.
Description
An attractive, smooth, and highly polished oval shell with a heavily enameled dorsum. The surface is adorned with distinctive light spots surrounded by darker brown mottling. The underside and aperture are not clearly visible in this angle, but typical specimens feature teeth lining both sides of the narrow, long opening.
Key Features
Smooth, glossy ovate-oblong dorsum, distinct pattern of pale ringed spots or blotches over a brownish background, and completely concealed spire in the adult form.
Collector Value
Moderately high desirability among conchologists due to its aesthetic appeal and glossy finish. Specimen value depends heavily on size, exact locality data, and perfection of the gloss.
Condition Notes
Good to Fine condition. The shell exhibits strong natural coloration and good gloss, though the exact condition of the ventral aperture and teeth cannot be fully assessed from the dorsal view.
Interesting Facts
Cowries were historically used as a form of currency in various parts of the world. The living animal features a mantle that covers the shell, which keeps the surface polished and free of algae.
Ecological Role
As nocturnal grazers, they feed primarily on algae and sponges, helping to keep reef surfaces clean. They are preyed upon by specialized carnivorous gastropods, large fish, and crustaceans.
Similar Species
Macrocypraea cervus (Atlantic Deer Cowrie), which is generally larger and has less distinct spots; and Macrocypraea cinerea (Gray Cowrie), which is smaller and more uniformly gray-brown.
Beach Finding Tips
Search rocky shorelines and reef flats at extremely low tides, or check drift lines after heavy tropical storms when deep-water debris washes ashore.
