Branched Murex, also known as the Chicoreus

Species

Chicoreus ramosus

Shell Type

Gastropod univalve with spiral shape and intricate frilly fronds

Family

Muricidae (Murex family)

Size

Approximately 5-6 inches in length, which is a medium-to-large size for this species. Adults typically range from 4 to 12 inches.

Color & Pattern

Uniform chalky white due to sun bleaching and weathering. In a fresh, living specimen, the color is typically a dull white to grayish-brown with darker brown or reddish markings. The interior aperture is white with a pinkish edge.

Rarity

Common in its native range, though intact specimens with fully preserved fronds are less frequently found pristine on beaches.

Habitat

Shallow tropical waters, coral reefs, and rocky substrates from the intertidal zone down to depths of about 30 meters.

Geographic Range

Indo-Pacific region, spanning from the Red Sea and East Africa across the Indian Ocean to Southeast Asia, northern Australia, and the western Pacific.

Description

A magnificent and highly ornate predatory gastropod shell featuring three varices per whorl adorned with elaborate, leaf-like frills and prominent spines. The body whorl is robust, terminating in a moderately long, slightly curved anterior canal. The outer lip is toothed, and the overall sculptural complexity makes it a masterpiece of marine architecture.

Key Features

Distinguished by three prominent varices per whorl, highly branched or frilly frond-like spines, a closed anterior canal, and a rounded body whorl.

Collector Value

Moderately high for exceptionally large, flawless specimens with intact fronds and natural coloration. Sun-bleached beach specimens like this have lower collector value, generally ranging from $10 to $30, whereas gem-quality specimens command much higher prices.

Condition Notes

Fair to Good condition. The shell is structurally mostly intact, but the delicate fronds show minor tip wear, and the entire shell is sun-bleached to a solid chalky white, lacking its natural outer coloration and periostracum.

Interesting Facts

Muricidae snails are famous for producing Tyrian purple, a coveted natural dye harvested from their hypobranchial glands used historically by ancient Phoenicians and Romans for royal garments.

Ecological Role

As a carnivorous predator, it plays a vital role in controlling populations of other mollusks and barnacles by boring into their shells or prying them open with its powerful foot and radula.

Similar Species

Chicoreus palmarosae (Rose-branched Murex), which features distinct pinkish-purple tinges on the fronds and a slightly more slender profile.

Beach Finding Tips

Best found by scuba diving or snorkeling around coral reefs and rocky areas in the Indo-Pacific. Beach-worn specimens wash up after heavy storms and high tides.
