Size

Approximately 3.5 inches in diameter, which is a standard adult size. Adults typically range from 2 to 4 inches across.

Color & Pattern

Uniform stark white. The color is not natural for a live specimen, which typically displays shades of purple, reddish-brown, or grey due to a velvet-like covering of tiny spines. The white color is the result of sun-bleaching after the animal has died and lost its soft tissue and spines.

Rarity

Very Common. Whole, bleached tests are frequently washed up on sandy beaches throughout its geographic range after storms or high tides.

Habitat

Inhabits shallow subtidal and intertidal zones, specifically sandy bottoms and mudflats in protected bays and coastal waters, where they can easily burrow just beneath or on the surface of the sediment.

Western Atlantic Ocean, spanning from the coast of New Jersey down through Florida, the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean, and extending to parts of South America.

Description

A classic, flattened disc-shaped test (endoskeleton) featuring a distinct five-petaled flower pattern (petaloid) on the aboral surface. The surface is smooth and velvety to the touch when weathered, with minute tubercles where spines once attached. The overall form is nearly circular with a very thin, slightly undulating margin.

Key Features

The presence of five distinct petal-shaped pores (petaloids) radiating from a central point on the upper surface, combined with a flattened, disk-like body and bilateral symmetry adapted for burrowing in sand.

Collector Value

Low to Moderate. Because they are so common, standard bleached tests have very little monetary value (usually sold for a dollar or found for free). However, intact, perfectly preserved specimens with minimal wear or rare fossilized variants can hold localized appeal for casual beach decorators and crafters.

Condition Notes

Good to Fine condition. The test appears entirely intact with no major structural fractures or missing edges, though it is fully bleached white from sun exposure and lacks the original purple living coloration and protective spines.

Interesting Facts

When alive, sand dollars are covered in tiny, moving spines that help them crawl across the seafloor and pass food to their central mouth. According to Christian folklore, the white bleached test represents the life of Jesus, featuring markings resembling the Christmas star, Easter lilies, and a dove, while breaking open the shell reveals five 'dove' shaped pieces.

Ecological Role

Sand dollars play a crucial role in benthic bioturbation by ingesting sediment and organic detritus, aerating the sandy substrate, and serving as a food source for bottom-feeding fish, crabs, and sea stars. They are not currently endangered, and collection is generally unrestricted for personal beachcombing.

Similar Species

Dendraster excentricus (Pacific Sand Dollar), which features an off-center petal pattern and is found on the West Coast of North America, and Mellita isometra (South-eastern Keyhole Urchin), which has distinct lunules (slits) piercing the test.

Beach Finding Tips

Look along shallow, sandy beaches at low tide, particularly right after a storm. Scan the receding wash for the faint outline of a white disc buried just beneath the wet sand, or search the high-tide line where dried seaweed and shells accumulate.
