Description

These specimens represent the opercula, or 'trapdoors', of marine turban snails. They are thick, heavy calcareous structures designed to seal the snail's aperture when retracted into its shell. The exterior surfaces are smooth, rounded, and dome-like (convex), while the interior surfaces reveal a distinct, tight spiral growth pattern of circular whorls. Due to extensive tumbling and weathering on the beach, the original glossy enamel and bright eye-like colors have worn away, leaving solid, chalky white calcareous discs.
