Two-Aperture Cancellaria (also known as the Common Nutmeg)

Phylum: Mollusca, Class: Gastropoda, Order: Neogastropoda, Family: Cancellariidae, Genus: Cancellaria, Species: Cancellaria reticulata · Cancellariidae (Nutmeg shells) · Gastropod; spiral-shaped snail shell.

Two-Aperture Cancellaria (also known as the Common Nutmeg)

Species

Cancellaria reticulata

Shell Type

Gastropod; spiral-shaped snail shell.

Family

Cancellariidae (Nutmeg shells)

Size

Approximately 0.75 to 1 inch. This is a juvenile specimen; adults typically range from 1 to 2.5 inches.

Color & Pattern

Pale cream to tan base color with light brown or ginger-colored spiral bands. The pattern consists of crossing ridges that create a textured, lattice-like (reticulated) appearance. The colors appear slightly softened but natural for a beach find.

Rarity

Common; while frequently found on North Carolina beaches like Holden Beach, finding a perfectly intact, uneroded specimen requires careful searching in the shell hash.

Habitat

Sublittoral zones and shallow offshore waters, typically on sandy or muddy bottoms. It is a marine species.

Geographic Range

Western Atlantic, ranging from North Carolina south to the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean, and Brazil.

Description

An attractive, robustly built shell with an ovate-conic shape. It features a distinctively rough, 'nutmeg' texture created by the intersection of strong axial ribs and spiral cords. The spire is moderately high, and the aperture is large with a thickened outer lip.

Key Features

Reticulated (cross-hatched) surface sculpture; three distinct folds (plicae) on the columella (inner pillar); lacking an operculum in adult life; distinctive brown spiral bands.

Collector Value

Modest; while common, they are highly desirable for beginners and regional collectors due to their beautiful texture and pattern. Value typically ranges from $1 to $5 for beach-found specimens.

Condition Notes

Good condition. The shell appears mostly intact with minimal rolling wear, though the outer lip shows some slight erosion typical of beach-cast specimens. The reticulated texture remains sharp. Grade: Fine.

Interesting Facts

Cancellariids are unique among gastropods because many species are specialized 'vampires' or external parasites, using a specialized radula to suck blood or fluids from resting rays and other fish.

Ecological Role

They act as specialized carnivores or parasites within the benthic ecosystem. Their presence indicates a healthy sandy-bottom marine environment with a diverse population of host species.

Similar Species

Cancellaria admetoides is smaller and rarer; Trigonostoma tenerum is more elongated with deeper sutures. Reticulata is distinguished by its more globose shape and three columellar folds.

Beach Finding Tips

Look in the shell piles ('hash' lines) during low tide at Holden Beach, especially after a storm. Their weight often causes them to settle near the bottom of shell drifts.
