Description

A striking, smooth, porcelain-white egg-shaped shell with a high natural gloss. The aperture is narrow, extending the entire length of the shell, flanked by a thick outer lip with fine, distinct teeth. The interior cavity visible through the aperture displays a rich orange to terracotta-brown hue, offering a stark contrast against the snowy-white exterior.

Interesting Facts

Despite being called an 'Egg Cowrie', it belongs to the Ovulidae family (false cowries). In life, the living animal's mantle is pitch-black covered with white dots and small papillae, completely covering the pure white shell to blend in with dark marine soft corals.

Ecological Role

Specialized predator on soft corals (alcyonaceans). It grazes on coral polyps while taking shelter beneath coral lobes, playing a role in regulating soft coral density on tropical reefs.

Similar Species

Calpurnus verrucosus (Umbilical Ovulid - has distinct pink terminal spots and a ridge), Ovula costellata (smaller with pinkish labial highlights).
