Checkered Dove Snail (also known as Common Dove Snail or Laced Dove Snail)

Species

Columbella mercatoria

Shell Type

Gastropod, whole shell, oval-conical spiral shape

Family

Columbellidae (Dove snail family)

Size

Approximately 12 millimeters (about 0.5 inches) in length. This is an average adult size for this species, which typically ranges from 8 to 15 millimeters.

Color & Pattern

The exterior features a mottled and checkered pattern with creamy-white base coloration overlaid with rich brown, reddish-brown, or amber blotches, squares, and zigzag markings, sometimes showing faint bluish or purplish hues around the aperture margin. The interior of the aperture is smooth and white with a slightly purplish-brown throat.

Rarity

Very Common, frequently encountered by beachcombers and snorkelers throughout its native range.

Habitat

Inhabits shallow subtidal and intertidal zones, typically found hiding under rocks, among algae, within coral rubble, and in seagrass beds in warm tropical and subtropical waters.

Geographic Range

Western Atlantic Ocean, including the Caribbean Sea, the Bahamas, southern Florida, Bermuda, and down through the Gulf of Mexico and parts of South America.

Description

A small, sturdy, and compact marine snail shell featuring an ovate-conic profile with a moderately elevated spire consisting of about six whorls. The surface is textured with fine spiral striae and axial growth lines. The outer lip is thickened and distinctly denticulate (toothed) on the interior, a hallmark of the family, framing a narrow, oval aperture that terminates in a short, notched anterior canal.

Key Features

Small, stout, glossy profile; distinct checkered or mottled brown and white color pattern; thickened outer lip lined with small teeth on the inner side; short anterior canal.

Collector Value

Low monetary value due to their abundance, but widely collected by beginner shell enthusiasts and incorporated into shell craft projects and miniature displays. Usually found as a free beach find rather than purchased.

Condition Notes

The shell is in overall good, intact condition with natural color retention, minimal wear on the spire, and an intact outer lip showing clear denticles. Collectibility grade: Good to Fine.

Interesting Facts

Dove snails are remarkably active for their tiny size, moving rapidly across rocks and sand when disturbed. Despite their delicate appearance, their thick outer lips and strong shells help them withstand heavy wave action in the intertidal zone.

Ecological Role

Serves as an important micro-grazer in shallow marine ecosystems, feeding on microscopic algae, detritus, and diatoms. Acts as a prey source for small fish, crabs, and carnivorous sea snails.

Similar Species

Other dove snails such as the Nitidella nitidula (Glossy Dovesnail), which is smoother and lacks the prominent checkered patterning of Columbella mercatoria.

Beach Finding Tips

Look in shell drift lines along high-tide marks, sift through coarse shell grit and coral rubble, or search gently under intertidal rocks during low tide in Caribbean or South Florida beaches.
