Species
Americoliva sayana
Shell Type
Gastropod, whole shell, cylindrical or olive-shaped spiral shape
Family
Olividae (Olive family)
Size
Approximately 1 inch (25 mm) long, which is a medium-sized specimen for this species. Adults typically range from 1 to 2.5 inches (25 to 64 mm).
Color & Pattern
Glossy porcelain-like surface featuring a creamy white or pale tan background overlaid with distinctive zigzag or tent-like brown markings (tentiginous pattern) resembling ancient hieroglyphics or letters, arranged in spiral bands. The colors are natural and retain a slight polished luster.
Rarity
Common, frequently found by beachcombers along the southeastern United States and Gulf coasts.
Habitat
Found in shallow marine waters, typically living just beneath the surface of clean intertidal and subtidal fine sand flats, sandbars, and shallow sand shoals.
Geographic Range
Western Atlantic Ocean, from North Carolina southward through Florida, the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean, and down to Brazil.
Description
An elegant, highly polished cylindrical shell with a low, pointed spire and a long, narrow aperture that extends the entire length of the body whorl. The surface is smooth and shiny with a porcelain texture, displaying charming zigzag brownish markings on a lighter background. The outer lip is simple and sharp, and the base features distinct oblique plications on the columella.

Interesting Facts
Lettered Olives are carnivorous predators that bury themselves in the sand during the day, waiting for passing prey like bivalves or scavenge for detritus. When caught, they envelop their prey in a mucus net before consuming it. The living animal can secrete a purple dye when handled.
Ecological Role
Functions as both a sandy-bottom predator and scavenger, helping to control invertebrate populations and clean up organic debris. It serves as prey for larger marine predators such as certain fish and shell-boring gastropods.
Similar Species
Pebble Olive (Oliva reticularis), which tends to be smaller with a broader geographic distribution in the Caribbean, and the Caribbean Olive (Americoliva bewleyana). They are distinguished primarily by subtle differences in pattern density and whorl proportions.
Beach Finding Tips
Look along sandy ocean-facing beaches at low tide, especially after a storm or strong onshore winds. Search the wet sand in the swash zone or sift through drift lines where smaller shells accumulate.
