Muted brownish-orange with areas of heavy white calcareous encrustation and bleaching. The spines show warm orange-tan tones where exposed, while the underlying shell matrix reveals pale pinkish and cream hues.

Habitat

Description

A rugged and heavily armored bivalve featuring a distorted, irregular oval shape dominated by numerous long, sharp, finger-like spines projecting along the margins. The surface is textured with rough growth lamellae and encrusted layers, creating a primitive, highly sculptural appearance characteristic of cemented bivalves.

Key Features

Distinguished by the cemented lower valve, irregular attachment area, lack of functional hinge teeth in adults replaced by a unique interlocking crura system, and the profusion of sharp, hollow spines radiating from the shell surface.

Collector Value

Moderately high desirability among specialized bivalve collectors, especially for specimens with long, undamaged, vividly colored spines. While heavily calcified beach specimens have lower value, pristine deep-water dredged specimens can command higher prices.

Condition Notes

Fair condition. The specimen shows significant wear, heavy surface calcification, and a sun-bleached appearance with worn spine tips. However, the overall sculptural form and numerous projecting spines remain remarkably intact, grading as a Good educational or display specimen.

Interesting Facts

Unlike true oysters, Spondylus are more closely related to scallops and possess dozens of simple, bright blue eyes along the mantle edge that can detect changes in light and shadow. They also permanently cement themselves to hard surfaces early in life.

Ecological Role

Acts as a foundational reef organism by providing microhabitats, shelter, and attachment surfaces for numerous small marine invertebrates, algae, and fish. They filter phytoplankton from the water column, contributing to water clarity.
