Color & Pattern

Tan to light brown base color with concentric growth lines and a darker brownish-purple patch near the posterior slope. The colors appear natural and well-preserved with no extreme sun-bleaching. The interior is not visible in this view, but typically features a white to purplish porcelain-like finish.

Rarity

Very Common. This species is regularly found washed ashore in large numbers along brackish estuaries, barrier islands, and bay beaches within its native range.

Habitat

Found primarily in brackish water environments such as estuaries, tidal rivers, and bays. They thrive in muddy or sandy-mud substrates in shallow waters, often tolerating wide ranges in salinity from nearly fresh water to marine conditions.

Geographic Range

Native to the western Atlantic coast and Gulf of Mexico, ranging from the northern Gulf coast (especially Texas and Louisiana) up through the Atlantic coast of the United States. It has also been introduced to other parts of the world via ballast water.

Description

A solid, sturdy, roughly triangular to sub-oval bivalve shell with a prominent, slightly curved umbo (beak) offset toward the front. The exterior surface is marked by distinct, regular concentric growth ridges that give it a textured feel. The margins are smooth and rounded, creating a compact and robust appearance typical of estuarine bivalves adapted to shifting sediments.

Good to Fine condition. The valve appears intact with the outer layer (periostracum) mostly worn away leaving the clean mineralized shell layer, and minimal edge chipping along the ventral margin. Highly collectible as a representative estuarine specimen.
